“Lindero”
acrylic latex on sailcloth
37” x 32”
1993
When we lived in Long Beach we lived near the corner of Broadway and Lindero. Across the street from us was a liquor store called Jones Liquor with a classic sign that caught my imagination. The sign had a curved arrow with “LIQUOR” written on it. I used the image of the curved arrow over and over in paintings from 1993 through 1995. I even build a seven foot sculpture out of cardboard of the sign at one point.
This painting was of our view on the second story of our apartment in a four-plex. Looking out you could see the liquor store and across the street you could also see a glass shop – that’s the GL on the right side of the painting. Lindero runs up the middle of the painting. Far off in the distance are the San Bernardino mountains.
