In the mid 90s I got very fascinated with doing straight-up abstracts which is much more difficult than I imagined. I was attempting non-representational abstracts- not for the faint of heart. I sketched out a lot of ideas in my notebooks and prepared maquettes but kept coming back to variations on this same shape, which I began to call my Grace Series.
I painted about 30 variations on this theme… this was painted about midway through the series. It involves layers of sailcloth applied collage-like onto the canvas to create the outline of the shapes. The paint strokes are bold and generous, a sign I was in the groove while creating this one.
