Got the munchies?

I was inspired to make these soft sculptures out of sailcloth in March of 1994- after making little sculptures out of cardboard for several years.

I bought an old sewing machine from my mother-in-law and started sewing various things in late 1993. Being a big fan of Claes Oldenburg it was just a matter of time before my sewing would turn to making soft sculptures.

Each one of these pieces was sewn, stuffed with fabric bits, and then painted to capture what these common products looked like at the time. The objects all have a wonderful chunkiness that makes you want to pick them up and squeeze them… and you can! They are hands-on art pieces!

Included here are seven of the ten different objects I made. Missing are two versions of the Marlboro Red pack of cigarettes and a Wrigley’s Doublemint gum pack – because those ended up in a few lucky people’s collections.

Included here:

  • Doritos Nacho Cheese Chips
  • Bazooka Gum Piece
  • Fritos Corn Chips – Original
  • Wrigley’s Juicy Fruit Gum pack
  • Hersheys Milk Chocolate Bar
  • M&Ms – Peanut, King Size – opened and eaten
  • Crushed Pepsi Can

I’m so glad I still have these pieces – they’re very motivating to get the sewing machine out again…
